Founder & Group Chairman, Hock Peng Organisation
Datuk Toh Chiew Hock is the visionary founder and Group Chairman of Hock Peng Organisation, one of Sarawak’s most respected property, construction, and hospitality groups. From humble beginnings as a young boy selling jambu fruits by the roadside in Sibu, Datuk Toh’s journey reflects the values of perseverance, integrity, and a deep commitment to uplifting his community.
Born and raised in Sibu, Datuk Toh assumed responsibility for his family at the young age of 14, following the passing of his mother. He left school to support his father and six siblings, working on a poultry farm and selling fruits and handcrafted stools. Despite economic hardships, he pursued evening classes to learn English, a decision that became pivotal in shaping his entrepreneurial future.
Datuk Toh’s first venture into business began with carpentry—turning skills learned in primary school into a livelihood. His determination and craftsmanship evolved into a successful furniture supply business, eventually paving the way for a natural transition into construction. In 1967, he established Hock Peng Organisation, named after himself and his younger brother, with the ambition of building a brighter future for Sarawak.
Under Datuk Toh’s leadership, Hock Peng rapidly expanded, securing landmark projects such as the KTS Building and Hoover Hotel in Bintulu. One of the company’s most iconic achievements was the development of Pulau Li Hua, a large-scale land reclamation and township development project that transformed a submerged island into one of Sibu’s most desirable residential areas.
Through decades of growth, Hock Peng diversified into dredging, land reclamation, hotels, retail, and service stations. Today, the company is recognized for its innovation, financial discipline, and people-first culture—values instilled by Datuk Toh himself. As a hands-on leader, he is known for meticulous planning, a deep understanding of the local landscape, and delivering projects on time and within budget.
In 2007, Datuk Toh was named Sarawak State Entrepreneur of the Year, a recognition of his enduring contribution to the state’s economic development and his role as a model entrepreneur. Despite not having a formal academic background, he is deeply respected for his wisdom, humility, and commitment to learning by doing—traits that continue to inspire his team and the next generation of leaders, including his six children.
Datuk Toh remains actively involved in the strategic direction of Hock Peng Organisation. He is supported by his wife, Datin Lau Ai Lang, a pillar of strength since their marriage in 1968, and his dedicated staff, many of whom have been with the company since its early days.
With over 500 employees and a legacy of shaping Sarawak’s built environment, Datuk Toh’s life story is a powerful example of how hard work, vision, and staying true to one’s values can create success that benefits not just one man—but entire communities.
